NIH:

  • The collection of grants that are considered R01 equivalents includes single component, independent research grants that have an annual direct cost budget above $200,000 and an award period that lasts at least four years.
  • R01 equivalents include substantial NIH research grants like the R01 that are or have historically been used as funding vehicles to launch an independent research career.
  • The collection of awards considered R01 equivalents changes over time reflecting changes in the types of grants being offered by the NIH.   The collection that was considered R01 equivalents during the last fiscal year can be found in the notes associated with data displays on New Investigators in the NIH Data Book.
  • For example, in FY 2016, the collection of R01-equivalent Grants included New Investigator Research Awards (R23), First Independent Research Support and Transition Award (R29), Traditional Research Grant (R01), Method to Extend Research in Time (R37), the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (DP2) and the Multi-Year Funded Research Project Grant (RF1). In some cases those grant activities have not been available for competition for many years and in other cases the applications come in as R01s and are converted to other activities at the time of award.

NHLBI: grant mechanism used by NIH to provide support for health-related research which can be investigator-initiated or in response to a program announcement or request for application.
