DSP: The prime sponsor is the agency or organization that initially provides the funding for a project. If NIH awarded funding to the American Heart Association, which then used all or part of that award to fund a project at the University of Iowa, NIH would be the prime sponsor of the project. The American Heart Association would still be the sponsor. The prime sponsor is also known as the original sponsor.
