DSP: The original sponsor of a grant or contract is the agency or organization that initially provides the funding for a project.  If NIH awarded funding to the American Heart Association, which then used all or part of that award to fund a project at the University of Iowa, NIH would be the original sponsor of the project.  The American Heart Association would still be the sponsor.  The original sponsor is also known as the prime sponsor.
