NIH: An administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of the organization with which it is affiliated. The Institutional Review Board has the authority to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction.

NHLBI: a board or committee designated by an institution to ensure the protection of rights and welfare of human research subjects and reporting to the Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP). IRBs make ongoing independent determinations to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove research protocols based on whether human subjects are adequately protected. Also known as Research Ethics Boards (REB) or Ethics Committee (EC).

OSP: A committee formally designated to approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving humans with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects.  Regulations have empowered IRBs to approve, require modifications in planned research prior to approval, or disapprove research.  An IRB performs critical oversight functions for research conducted on human subjects that are scientific, ethical, and regulatory.

PVAMU: A federally mandated committee charged with reviewing and approving the involvement of human subjects/participants in all research projects to ensure that the safety and welfare of subjects are protected. The IRB serves as an institutional compliance committee and is responsible for reviewing reported instances of regulatory noncompliance related to the involvement of human subjects/participants in research. At PVAMU, there is one IRB committee to review biomedical research and social/behavioral research.
