A new strategic concept of the European Union and the Member States, and one of the five initiatives for the European Research Area (relevant work began in 2009). The purpose of Joint Programming Initiatives is to enhance joint efforts to address major European and global challenges for society (such as climate change, food security, population ageing). Under Joint Programming Initiatives, the Member States coordinate their research programmes more closely than before, and the EU and the Commission carry out a supporting role.
