The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is the set of legislation and practices adopted by the Member States of the European Union in order to provide a common, unified policy on agriculture. The CAP is the most integrated of the Community-wide policies implemented by the EU. It aims to ensure that agriculture can be maintained over the long term at the heart of a living countryside. This means that the policy is targeted not just at agricultural producers but also at the wider rural population, consumers and society as a whole.
